Electromagnetic simulation of planar and flyback transformers using SOLIDWORKS
Wednesday, February 24, 2021
Planar magnetics is replacing conventional magnetic structures in many applications. Planar and flyback transformers are good choices for applications requiring integrated magnetics. A planar transformer is essentially a transformer that uses flat windings, usually on a printed circuit board, instead of copper wire to form the coils. The PCB construction creates a different form factor that offers some unique advantages and a few challenges. The major issue in this design is the high frequency eddy current losses due to skin and proximity effects.
In this webinar session, EMWorks products will be used to investigate and simulate planar and flyback transformers. The following topics will be covered.
- Proximity and skin effects versus input power, frequency, and materials
- Different coil parameters including inductances, resistances
- Magnetic saturation
- Iron and eddy losses
- Loaded and unloaded studies
- Thermal and structural analyses
